AI is everywhere.
Restaurant owners are using it to write captions, create emails, brainstorm promotions, build marketing plans, and produce content faster than ever.
And I am all for it.
But there is a big difference between using AI to improve your marketing and letting AI become your marketing.
Use it the wrong way and everything starts sounding the same. Generic captions. Fake looking images. Cheesy phrases. No personality.
The goal is not to let AI take over your restaurant marketing.
The goal is to use AI to make good marketing better.
Here is how.
Start With the Business Problem, Not the AI Tool
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people opening ChatGPT and asking:
"What should I post today?"
That is already the wrong question.
Before we even think about AI, we need to ask what the business actually needs.
Maybe Tuesday nights are dead.
Maybe brunch reservations have slowed down.
Maybe you launched a catering menu and nobody knows about it.
Maybe a new location needs more local awareness.
Maybe you have thousands of people in your email database, but they are not coming back often enough.
Those are business problems.
Now we can figure out how marketing can help solve them.
Then we can ask how AI can help us execute that marketing faster and more effectively.
That order matters.
Instead of asking AI for ten random Instagram ideas, give it a real problem:
"We need to increase Tuesday night traffic. Here is our current offer, our target customer, our average check, and what we have promoted in the past. Give me five campaign angles we could test."
Now we are getting somewhere.
AI works much better when it has a job.
Give AI the Right Context Before Asking It to Create
Restaurants are clearly moving toward AI.
According to the National Restaurant Association, 28 percent of restaurant operators planned to invest in integrating AI into their operations in 2025.
That tells us restaurant owners are paying attention.
But simply having access to AI does not mean you are going to get good results from it.
If you give AI a lazy prompt, you are probably going to get a lazy answer.
Type:
"Write a caption for my Italian restaurant."
And you will probably get something like:
"Indulge in the authentic flavors of Italy and experience a culinary journey like no other."
Come on.
Nobody talks like that.
Even worse, that same caption could probably work for thousands of other restaurants.
AI needs context.
Tell it about:
- Your concept
- Your location
- Your target customer
- Your brand personality
- Your signature dishes
- Your price point
- Your current offers
- Your marketing goals
- Your tone of voice
- Words and phrases your brand would never use
I recommend creating a simple AI brand and marketing guide that contains this information.
Think of it like onboarding a new employee.
You would never hire somebody on Monday morning, tell them absolutely nothing about your restaurant, and say, "Go run our marketing."
But that is basically what people are doing with AI every day.
Give it the information first.
Then ask it to work.
Use AI to Think With You, Not Just Write for You
This is where I think restaurants are leaving a ton of opportunity on the table.
AI is not just a caption machine.
It can help you think through problems.
Let's say Taco Tuesday has been slowing down for the past two months.
Do not just ask AI for another Taco Tuesday caption.
Give it the details.
What is the offer?
What does it cost?
Who normally comes in?
What have you promoted before?
What are customers saying?
Then ask questions like:
"Why might this promotion be losing momentum?"
"What are five ways we could reposition this offer?"
"How could we make this more appealing to families?"
"How could we turn this into something people want to bring friends to?"
Now AI becomes a brainstorming partner instead of a copy machine.
You can use the same approach to analyze Google reviews, organize customer feedback, identify content gaps, compare offers, develop customer personas, or prepare for marketing meetings.
Sometimes the most valuable thing AI gives you is not the final answer.
It is a better way to think about the problem.
Let AI Handle the Repetitive Marketing Work
This is where AI can save restaurant teams a ton of time.
Let's say you filmed a great video of your chef talking about a new menu item.
That one video can become:
- An Instagram Reel caption
- A Facebook post
- A YouTube Short title
- An email
- An SMS message
- Website copy
- Instagram Story text
- A blog idea
You already did the hard part.
You created something real.
Now use AI to get more mileage out of it.
AI is also great for creating first drafts of emails, summarizing meetings, organizing reviews, generating headline variations, building FAQs, and turning long form content into shorter pieces.
That is where I love using it.
Let technology handle more of the repetitive work so your team can spend more time on strategy, creativity, relationships, and hospitality.
Protect Your Restaurant's Personality
This one is huge.
Your restaurant should not sound like AI.
Your restaurant should sound like your restaurant.
If your chef is loud, funny, passionate, and full of personality, I want some of that personality in the content.
If you run a relaxed neighborhood restaurant where everybody seems to know everybody, your marketing should feel that way too.
Give AI real material to work with.
Use:
- Owner stories
- Chef opinions
- Staff personalities
- Behind the scenes moments
- Customer experiences
- Neighborhood references
- Things people actually say inside the restaurant
AI can help organize and clean up the message.
It should not become the personality behind the message.
If your restaurant has tons of personality when I walk through the door but sounds like a corporate robot online, something went wrong.
Never Use AI to Fake the Guest Experience
This is another area where restaurants need to be careful.
AI generated images are getting unbelievably realistic.
But just because you can create something does not mean you should use it.
If you are promoting a burger, show me the burger I am actually going to get.
If you have a beautiful dining room, show me the real dining room.
If your place is packed and people are having a great time on Friday night, capture that.
Do not use AI to create fake customers, fake reviews, fake awards, fake food, or fake experiences and present them as reality.
Marketing creates expectations.
If your marketing promises one experience and the guest receives something completely different, you did not help the restaurant.
You hurt it.
Great restaurant marketing should amplify what is actually happening inside your four walls.
Keep a Human in the Approval Process
Here is something else every restaurant needs to remember.
AI can be confidently wrong.
Before anything gets published, somebody needs to check it.
Are the hours correct?
Is the price correct?
Is the promotion still running?
Is the event date right?
Does the reservation link work?
Does this actually sound like our restaurant?
This becomes especially important with holiday hours, allergy information, special events, prices, menus, and promotions.
AI can create the first draft.
You are still responsible for the final product.
Five Ways Your Restaurant Can Start Using AI Today
You do not need some massive AI system to start benefiting from it.
Start simple.
Create a master restaurant prompt.
Put your concept, locations, audience, brand voice, offers, differentiators, and current goals into one document.
Give AI your brand guidelines.
Explain how your restaurant communicates and, just as importantly, how it does not communicate.
Repurpose your best content.
Take videos, emails, blogs, interviews, reviews, or promotions you already created and use AI to turn them into additional marketing assets.
Ask for multiple options.
Do not assume the first answer is the best answer. Ask for three, five, or even ten different angles.
Read everything out loud.
I love this one.
If you would never say those words to a customer standing in front of you, change them.
Simple.
Build AI Into Your Restaurant Marketing System
Once you get comfortable with those basic uses, the next step is making AI part of your overall marketing process instead of randomly opening ChatGPT whenever you need a caption.
Your process should look something like this:
Business Objective → Strategy → Real Content → AI Assistance → Human Review → Distribution → Measurement
Notice what comes first.
The business objective.
Not AI.
Maybe we need more Sunday brunch reservations.
Great.
We create the strategy.
We capture real brunch content.
We use AI to help create captions, emails, SMS messages, ads, headlines, and campaign variations.
A human reviews everything.
We distribute it.
Then we measure reservations.
That is the real value of AI.
It should not replace your marketing system.
It should help that system work faster, smarter, and more efficiently.
AI Should Make Your Restaurant Marketing Better, Not More Generic
Restaurants should be using AI.
I believe that.
The opportunities are too big to ignore.
But restaurant owners also need to understand what AI is good at and what humans still need to own.
Let AI help with speed.
Let it help with organization.
Let it help you brainstorm.
Let it handle repetitive work.
But your strategy still needs a human.
Your creativity needs a human.
Your brand personality needs a human.
And most importantly, hospitality will always need a human.
The restaurants that win with AI are not going to be the ones using the most AI.
They are going to be the ones using it with the most purpose.
