ChatGPT can recommend your New Jersey restaurant when it finds information that fits a guest’s request. To improve your chances, make your hours, menus, location details, reviews, and photos accurate and easy to find. Clear information helps search tools understand your restaurant and helps guests decide to visit.
AI is already another front door to your restaurant. A guest can ask where to take the family for dinner, compare a few options, and check a menu before ever seeing your Instagram account.
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, means making your information easy to find and use in answers from tools such as ChatGPT. For restaurant owners, that starts with answering the questions that help someone choose a place to eat.
My approach at Brand To Table is simple: give people clear reasons to choose your restaurant, then make taking the next step easy.
Are people actually using AI to choose restaurants?
Yes. A Menufy survey conducted by Dynata in September 2026 asked 1,000 U.S. adults about AI and restaurant discovery:
- 60% said they use AI tools to help decide where to eat.
- 35% said an AI recommendation introduced them to an unfamiliar restaurant they later visited or ordered from.
The survey covered tools including ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. These are national survey findings, not a measure of ChatGPT use in New Jersey alone. restaurant.menufy.com
That gives New Jersey operators a concrete reason to review their online information now. Your next guest may start with a question instead of a restaurant name.
How does ChatGPT find restaurants to recommend?
ChatGPT can search the web for current information and use location information to find local restaurants. OpenAI says search results depend on multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed. OpenAI Help Center
Think about requests like these:
- “Where can I get Portuguese food in Newark’s Ironbound?”
- “Find a restaurant near Sparta for dinner with kids on Sunday.”
- “Where can I book a private dinner near East Hanover?”
- “Which restaurants on Lake Hopatcong serve Sunday brunch?”
Those are different dining needs. Your website should explain which needs your restaurant actually serves.
“Great food and good vibes” leaves plenty of questions.
A clear description of your cuisine, town, dining experience, and services gives guests something useful to work with.
What restaurant information should you fix first?
Start with facts that affect whether someone can visit, order, or book.

Google’s own guidance supports keeping business information complete and accurate, maintaining menus, and using photos that help guests understand the business. Those are useful foundations for local discovery, even though Google and ChatGPT use different systems. Google Business Profile Help
My recommendation: fix wrong hours and broken booking links before spending time writing another blog post.
Make your menu useful beyond the dining room
Publish your menu as readable website text whenever possible. A downloadable PDF can remain available, but guests should also be able to scan dishes, descriptions, and prices directly on the page.
Keep seasonal menus clearly labeled. Remove outdated menu links you control. Review the menu displayed on your Google Business Profile, too.
Google lets restaurants manage menu items, descriptions, prices, and menu links. Its guidance also explains how to address outdated menu photos. Google Business Profile Help
Here’s the Brand To Table perspective: a menu launch needs one coordinated update.
The menu, website, photos, social content, and ordering pages should tell the same story when the new dishes become available. If the creative is ready but the website still shows last season’s menu, the rollout is incomplete.
Give each restaurant location its own clear facts
For restaurant groups, I recommend a useful page for each location. Include that location’s address, hours, menu, services, and booking links.
In our Capital Craft work, we’ve had to distinguish promotions and events at East Hanover from those at Green Brook. The restaurant name alone doesn’t tell a guest where a particular event is happening.
That detail matters when someone asks for a specific experience near a specific town.
For every promotion, publish:
- The restaurant and location.
- The date and time.
- What the guest receives.
- Any limits or conditions.
- How to reserve or attend.
My operating rule: if an offer needs a manager to explain which location it applies to, the online information needs work.
That’s a practical lesson from execution, not a claim that a location page guarantees AI visibility.
Use reviews and photos to support the experience you promise
Ask guests for honest feedback. Read the reviews, respond thoughtfully, and bring repeated issues into your operations meetings.
At Brand To Table, I treat review feedback as direction for both service and content. If guests keep asking about parking or whether families are welcome, those questions deserve clear answers on the website.
Use current photos that show:
- Signature dishes still on the menu.
- The dining room and seating.
- The entrance guests need to find.
- Private dining or outdoor areas you actually offer.
Add clear dish names and useful descriptions alongside relevant images.
Photos help people judge whether the restaurant fits their plans. They should support accurate written details. They are not a published ChatGPT ranking checklist.
Can search tools access your website?
Ask your website provider to check that your important pages are publicly accessible and that search crawlers can reach them.
For ChatGPT search, OpenAI specifically advises allowing OAI Searchbot, its search crawler, and permitting its published crawler traffic through the website’s hosting or security systems. OpenAI Help Center
For Google’s AI search features, Google says established SEO practices still matter. It does not require special AI markup or a particular writing format. developers.google.com
Clear headings and direct answers make your site easier for people to use. Treat that structure as good communication, not a trick that forces an AI recommendation.
Run this restaurant discovery check this week
Set aside one focused session with whoever owns your website and listings.
- Compare the basics. Check hours, menus, addresses, and links across your website, Google Business Profile, and reservation or ordering platforms.
- Answer five guest questions. Choose questions your team hears about parking, brunch, children, private dining, or menu options.
- Review current photos. Replace images you control that show unavailable dishes or outdated spaces.
- Test realistic AI searches. Use your town and a real dining need. Record the question, date, answer, and sources shown.
- Correct the source. If an answer contains wrong information, check the cited page and update information you control.
- Assign an owner. Decide who updates public information when hours, menus, or promotions change.
A few test searches can uncover gaps. They don’t establish a fixed ranking.
Track visits from AI referrals where your analytics can identify them, along with reservations, orders, and qualified event inquiries. Add “How did you hear about us?” to guest conversations.
Clicks do not pay your bills. Covers do.
Make your restaurant easier to choose
Getting named is one step. The next step is giving that guest enough confidence to book.
Menufy found that 54% of respondents would check menu information and prices before ordering from an unfamiliar restaurant recommended by AI. Another 47% would visit its official website. restaurant.menufy.com
That’s why I connect content, websites, guest feedback, and booking paths at Brand To Table. Each piece should help move someone closer to a visit.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT restaurant recommendations
How can I get my New Jersey restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?
Make accurate, useful information publicly available. Start with your location, hours, current menu, dining options, and working booking links. Check what appears in realistic local searches. No one can guarantee a recommendation.
Does a Google Business Profile help with AI restaurant discovery?
It supports visibility in Google Search, Maps, and Google’s AI responses. Keep it accurate, but don’t treat it as a direct submission or guaranteed ranking signal for ChatGPT. developers.google.com
Do I need a blog to appear in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI’s search guidance does not list a blog as a requirement. Prioritize useful restaurant, location, and menu pages before adding articles solely to get AI attention. OpenAI Help Center
Will better photos guarantee more AI recommendations?
No. Use current photos to help guests understand your food and setting. There is no published guarantee that uploading more photos will earn a ChatGPT recommendation.
How quickly will updated restaurant information appear in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline. Update the original sources, keep the information consistent, and check again. An update going live does not mean every search tool has already picked it up.
What should a restaurant with several locations prioritize?
Give each location accurate hours, menus, offers, and booking links. Make it clear which experience is available at which address so guests can choose and book the right restaurant.
